I am very much your typical contractor in as much as I started out as so many of us do, and after a few years almost went bankrupt as so many of us also do. I entered the industry as an apprentice plumber in 1959. I subsequently went in business in 1975 in Novato California, which is located 25 miles North of San Francisco, where I am still active in the day-to-day operations. Again like most of us I was a very good at my trade but had no idea how to run a business, and was completely clueless about what my costs were and therefore what my hourly labor rate should be to cover them. Rather than find out, I phoned up one of the other plumbers in town, and asked what he charged per hour. Based on what he told me, I then established my rate $2.00 per hour higher than his and I was in business, sound familiar? This very easy, but dangerous way of establishing what to charge for our own companies services is still being used today; and it is exactly why most businesses either fail or do not make a real profit for years. I recently came across an old Chinese Proverb that addresses the folly of not knowing ones costs; it goes like this. To guess is cheap. To guess wrong is expensive. How can I help you? I am not just a salesperson trying to sell you something; I am one of you who have been where you are and I have fixed it! I sincerely do not want anyone to have to go through what I did 10 years ago, and I am here to help you make the changes you need to before that happens. |
